Belvedere is a high density mixed-use community outside of downtown Charlottesville and part of the LEED-ND Pilot Program. McKee Carson was originally contracted to review and analyze the community master plan and early grading plans with the objective of enhancing the existing hydrological and ecological systems as well as the cultural histories of the site. This exercise quickly transformed into a directing set of core values and landscape pattern for the development.

Using infrastructure as the basis of design, McKee Carson employed low impact technologies and strategic design interventions to create a community landscape. Mixed canopy trees, woodland shrubs, and native grasses line the streets in undulating landforms representative of the Piedmont. Stormwater is collected and strategically revealed to engage and educate community members. Stone, similar to the walls preserved on the site, contrast with steel in light/sign post bases. Each component is designed and engineered by our team with the objective of connecting people to place.
