The Charlottesville Ice Park is a recreational and entertainment complex located on a one-acre, urban infill site at the western terminus of the pedestrian mall; the focus of historic Downtown Charlottesville. A maze of existing utilities and a severe slope through the site were the challenges that McKee Carson met with innovative design that seamlessly blended the existing pedestrian mall with the proposed improvements. The facility includes a regulation-size indoor hockey rink, associated support space such as rental area, locker and party rooms, and a mezzanine level for a restaurant which overlooks the rink via a glass curtain wall.  In addition, the new facility utilizes an adjacent historic commercial building as the pro shop. Outdoor eating and gathering areas were established as transitional space between the Ice Park and the public pedestrian mall.

The building was designed by Dalgliesh, Eichman, Gilpin, and Paxton, Architects.  McKee Carson’s responsibilities included assistance with initial building configuration, urban design of terraces, lighting, and landscaping, engineering of infrastructure for the entire facility, special use permitting and construction oversight.
